The MBTA, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the City of Salem were devoted to transforming the existing commuter rail station into a Salem downtown gateway that would contribute to the City’s revitalization. This $45 million dollar project included features such as: full high platform suitable for 9 train cars, platform canopies connected to buses, waiting rooms, “pedal and park” bicycle storage and a new accessible pedestrian bridge from the Washington St. intersection down to the platform. Incorporated into the design, the landscape architects added a viewing area enhanced by landscaping elements from the old historic station.
